Like all navigable rivers across the world the Erne has been the highway of human activity in this part of Ireland since humans settled in Ireland about 8,000 years ago. With a system of roads built up over the past 200 years we not tend to see Lough Erne, its lakes and tributaries as barriers rather than the communications highway it once was, and indeed still can be, if we so desire to use it.

With an increasing number of people using the waterway, for fishing, cruising, pleasure boating, bird watching or simply having a pleasurable day out we felt a need for a guide book to tell people what can be seen on the islands or close to the shores of Lough Oughter, Lough Gowna and Upper and Lower Lough Erne as well as on their numerous tributaries. The Erne River System is the third largest in Ireland, draining about one million acres,. It is still largely unspoilt and picturesque raths, monasteries and castles line its banks and dot the surrounding countryside.
